Q: Mike I see in the specs section that the maximum of the bar is up to 18 inches. Does this mean that it can accept an 18 inch chain, or should one stick to the advertised 16 inches? by Serge from Maryland on October 31, 2011
A: This saw can accept bar and chain combinations from 13" long up to 18" long- the bar and chain must match each other in both the length and width so it will run smoothly & safely.
This means you can change the length to suit the job at hand- a shorter bar & chain if you're doing a lot of trimming; the 16" pair for most tasks, or that larger bar for big projects.
Bear in mind that the balance and weight of the saw will change as you change the bar & chain. Plan on a few minutes of practice to get used to the feel of the saw before you start serious cutting. by Mike, Product Expert
Q: If I purchase this saw, is there a carry case made for it? by DLC from North Carolina on September 24, 2011
A: Yes, we do. Here is the model number Model 1000001-07. by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Is there a 4 cycle chainsaw available?
by Joe from California on September 23, 2011
A: None that I am aware of. by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Why does the Husqvarna 440E only have a 1year warranty while the 435 has 2 by Mark Navone from Massachusetts on July 17, 2011

Mike's Recommendation
This saw is very similar to our Best pick, but with more good stuff.
The body of the saw is still set long-ways and well balanced; and the engine is a little larger and more powerful- but still weighs under 10 pounds.
The hand guard and chain catcher have been beefed up for more protection and user comfort.
This is still considered a Consumer grade saw, but it will take on most household chores with very little effort, and all but the largest trees and wood piles.

Best chainsaw I've ever owned.
First a little background. In 1976, when I was 28, I bought 2 acres of wooded acreage for my first home. Cleared it all with a little 16" Homelite. It was a good little machine and I learned a lot about chainsaws. Later, to maintain the property, I bought a much larger chainsaw and learned that bigger isn't always better. Much to heavy for casual use. So I downsized to a 16" Craftsman. A nice little machine. Sometimes cranky to get started, but it did the job for many many years. What was always a challenge for me was maintenance. Cleaning the drive gears, tightening the chain and sharpening the chain.
Four years ago I moved into an over 55 active living community. So I gave away my chainsaw, wood chipper and all of my major gardening tools. So, "how'd that work out for ya?". Not so much. I really like having my own property, and less rules. So we sold the place and moved back to the country. Now with another 2+ acre property I have all the same old responsibilities. We moved in three days before hurricane Irene hit Connecticut and a little over a month before the October 2011 nor'easter snow storm. Both of them crippled Connecticut. They also brought down branches and branches and trees and trees everywhere. So, I needed another chainsaw.
After researching the various offerings out there I settled on the Husqvarna 440E. Mostly because of the reviews saying it was easy to start. At age 63 I don't need to be killing my self starting a chainsaw. The reviews were right. It starts so easy. Also, the cover over the chain drive comes off so easy with the easy spin locking mechanism. Cleaning is a breeze. Adjusting the tension on the chain couldn't be easier. Great little mechanism that. I absolutely love this saw.
I bought a Granberg Bar-Mount Chain Saw Sharpener, Model# G-106B to go with it. Sharpening a chain has never been easier. A great accessory for your saw.

So far so good
The saw was bought to make a dent in a significant amount of Hurricane Irene tree damage (Connecticut.) Large trees and branches . . .
Overall, I'm happy with the saw's performance, though the one "complaint" is that starting her has taken some getting used to/technique. It seems that re-starting requires re-priming and one pull with the chock engaged, prior to additional pulls after choking. Don't know if that's by design or not . . .
Chain tightening is an easy plus. Haven't tried to replace the chain yet, but would suggest a spare one when purchasing if any significant amount of cutting is planned.
CSD RESPONDS: If you'd like to ask Husqvarna about the re-start sequence, just give them a call at 800-487-5951.
Having a spare chain around is always a good idea!

Husqvarna Easy
This is the best chain saw I have ever owned, bar none. Like they said, read the manual, filled with a fresh mix and it
fired right up.
Had second thoughts about having the break applied on startup, but after doing it a couple of times it is the only way. Someone had safety in mind.
All in all well balanced, easy start, and ease of use made this an excellent choice.
Will never go back to any other chain saw. Rated 5 stars.

Very powerful
Fast delivery, fired right up, cuts great, very powerful. I put it in an optional husky soft bag, I think this saw will last a long time.
Thanks, Chain Saws Direct.

Helpline solved starting issue
The unit instructions do not include "First-time start/use" instructions.
The help line (whose number is almost at the end of the instruction booklet) immediately solved the starting issue and admitted this was a common call because of this oversight.
Otherwise, Mrs. Lincoln, I've enjoyed the play...

Great saw
I ordered the saw a couple of weeks ago, but only just started using it yesterday. What I ordered is what I got - a great saw at a great price.
I know it's only one day of use so far, but I am very happy with the product and the service I got when ordering.
Just make sure that if you order online and have it sent somewhere else, you talk to someone in person to confirm the order.

How to Pick The Perfect Bar Length
When it comes to picking a bar length for your personal chain saw there are a lot of scenarios to keep in mind.
What you want to cut can determine on the size of bar you want to choose.
If you are felling trees you probably want to choose a bar a little bigger, like an 18-20" bar. Keep in mind that you can still fell a tree with a smaller bar, you just need to make more cuts.
Another factor to be mindful of is the bigger the bar, the more the chain saw weighs. You may not notice the weight as much with a smaller arborist-style saw, but this is a big deal when you are planning on cutting all day and you start to get tired on the first cut.
If you plan on just trimming trees, a much smaller bar can be used. Select a chain saw that is easy to handle and won't tire you out when cutting for long periods of time.
If you are looking for a unit that can do it all, a 16" bar may be ideal. You can still take down a good size tree and easily trim pesky branches.

Not a good saw
I bought a Husqvarna 440e from this site. When I received the saw, it would not start--even after an hour trying.
I called the Mowers Direct customer service number and they told me once gas has been put in it, they will not accept it returned.
Bottom line- I got a bad saw, they got my money and there's no after-sales support. The customer service rep even got argumentative on the phone. I strongly suggest another retailer.
CSD RESPONDS: As our Customer Service rep tried to explain to you, the warranty is through Husqvarna. You need to call Husqvarna at 800-448-7543.
They will direct you to the nearest Authorized Service Center, where your saw will be repaired at no cost to you.
It is against Federal Law to ship ANY item with an engine, once the engine has been gassed up. We state it plainly on every page of our web site under the Returns Tab (just click on the Customer Service button).
Should you have problems with Husqvarna service, Mowers Direct stands ready to assist in any way we can. Since Husqvarna has one of the highest service ratings in the industry we don't think you will have a problem once you give them a call.

I am sorry I waited so long!
I was in the market to get a better chainsaw. I checked the reviews online and found that Husqvarna is just as good as a Stihl but costs less.
Then I checked Husqvarna's web site and decided on the 440E. The best price I could find was with Chain Saws Direct, so I ordered it and received it within a few days.
I had been using a Poulan Pro 35cc and a Poulan Pro 42cc for about 2 years. I had no idea what a difference it makes using a better chain saw.
There is no comparison. I could have saved myself so much time just getting the right chainsaw in the first place. The Poulan is okay if you only need to cut up small trees once in a while.
