More China Junk
I only used high test shell gas and two stroke oil. Like everyone else, the saw will not stay running, and is very hard to start. After an hour in the hot sun, I had enough and took my sledge hammer and beat this piece of crap into the ground and set fire to what was left.

You will be better off buying an ax than wasting money on a Poulan. Poulan should be ashamed to sell such junk. Years back, their chainsaws were decent. Stop screwing people over with your junk, Poulan!

Junk
What a piece of junk. I have spent more money trying to get/keep it running than it originally cost. One time I took it in because it was running backwards? How does that happen?

I use nothing but VP gas for my two cycles. So no water in the fuel.

If you are going to buy it, put a 14" bar on it. Better yet 12, which is really what the horsepower on the saw can support. But now you have a really heavy saw for something less than you wanted. Plus the bar they sold is cheap... more

Awesome Saw!!!!!
I purchased this saw because the price was right. I wasn't sure if this saw was going to be able to handle what I needed it for. But to my surprise this saw has made me a believer. I have cut down a cottonwood tree that was over 36 inches in diameter and did not skip a beat.

It cut through it like a hot knife through butter. It had no problem cutting that big tree up and the other big red oak and white oak and other trees that stood before it. So far since September 2014 to now December... more

Awesome Saw!
I bought the Poulan Pro 4218AVX last year when I had tree damage from the storms... Cut wood like a hot knife through butter... We're talking Maple, Walnut, Locust, and Willow... Some of the limbs were rather large and I thought that maybe I should have gotten a bigger saw... But at 5'7" and only 130 lbs. I didn't want anything to big I couldn't handle... Saw was easy to use and I didn't have to struggle with it.... Just lay it on the limb and it did the rest... Did some serious cutting... more

Piece Of Crap
This saw will run fine for a few months, then you have carb problems and the saw will not run. Forget trying to find someone to work on a Poulan. I will NEVER buy another Poulan, complete waste of money.

Randy,
I included a link to Poulan Pro's dealer locator below. You may contact them at 800-554-6723. You can try draining the gas and using either fresh gas or a premixed gas such as TruFuel. The oil is premixed and there is no ethanol included so it has a shelf life of a few years.

Won't Stay Started
Bought it brand new, followed all the instructions to the tee. Initially started fine, ran fine, after about 8 cuts or so it kept stalling and I found myself doing more starting than cutting. My time is worth more than that I decided and am taking it back to the store. I'll just have to bite the billet and buy Stihl or Husky! The reviews on this site are a great tool and help greatly. Love your site!!

Totally Fed Up
I Bought two of these saws. I could not get the first on to idle and broke the handle in half trying to start it. I took it back to "Big Box Store" they gave me another. The new one would not run unless you had someone hold down the trigger while you pulled the starter rope and don't let go of the trigger. After one tank of fuel it never started again. Called Poulan and they told me to take it to their warranty center 30 miles away. He could not keep it running and said it... more

Piece Of Junk And Extremely Bad Customer Service.
This is my second one. I should have learned from the first one but I thought I may have just gotten a lemon on the first one. My new one has been unused for a month and a half because of poor service info. They gave me the names of 4 authorized service centers and not one did service for Poulan. They said, "I don't know why they keep saying we do service for them". My brand new saw which is a Pro 18" has either a bad carburetor or vacuum leak. There are no service centers within... more

Good While It Last
Saw cuts wood good out of the box. I cut 6 to 8 truck loads then I started having trouble with it. It won't stay running and as soon as you try to cut it wants to die. I took good care of it and fuel ratio is right. Have to restart it every five minutes. My brother bought the same saw and is having the same trouble. I think it's a carb problem. It was a good saw while it lasted but I was hoping it was gonna last longer than a year. I would spend the extra money and get a better saw!!!
Pros: Easy To Use, Price, Light Weight
Cons: Low Quality, Unreliable, Durability

Great looking saw, came assembled. Started cutting a couple of Oaks up that I had a contractor drop for me. Went through logs from 6 inches up to 30 inches with no problem. Only problem I encountered was that you have to constantly add bar oil. Found that out after I filled the bar oil twice and was cutting for about 15 minutes when it fouled. I"m taking it back to the store and getting the 20 inch. I"m not about to work on a machine that I've had 45 minutes. Not too loud either. Great Saw!!!

Piece Of Junk
First use - ran for about 20 minutes then died and would not restart. Repaired under warranty (replaced ignition kit). Second use - ran for about 20 minutes then died and would not restart. Took it back in for warranty repair and was told that the cylinder was scored and this was not covered under warranty. They blamed it on "bad gas". What a crock! I used fresh gas and carefully mixed the oil to the stated ratio. My previous chainsaw lasted 10 years and this one lasted... more

Terrible Saw
Last year I had bought the 16"inch Poulan. Its the green colored one. Anyway it seemed to do okay. Had no real problem starting or anything then. Since It lasted at least a year I thought I would again buy another Poulan Saw. I bought the Poulan Pro PP4218AVX.
This saw didnt last a couple months at most. Ran maybe 10 hours off and on various different days cutting med size trees and logs.
Then close to the same time I started having problems with the little 16" Hard starting and... more

Throwaway Saw
I bought this saw about 6 years ago?????? I have used it very little. About a year ago I was having a sapling cut and the saw locked up. When I say it locked up, the saw will run but it throws sparks out the side of the clutch plate. The saw was and is always full of chain oil. I have to keep a check on that because it leaks it. The saw has leaked chain oil since the day it was bought. So I call it a throwaway saw because it costs more to fix it than if you just go buy a better one.
Pros: Price
Cons: Low Quality, Durability

Manufacturer Response
Brand Rep
Luther,
It is normal for a saw to leak minor amounts of bar and chain oil due to the pressure differences caused by the heating and cooling cycles a chainsaw goes through. We recommend draining bar and chain oil before storage for this reason.

Sparks from under the clutch cover would indicate damage has occurred to the bar, chain, or sprocket. This is most likely not related to the oiler, but rather is damaged caused while felling trees and cutting wood.

Cant Beat The 18" Poulan Pro For The Money
This is an incredible saw for cutting firewood and small to medium size tree felling. I have owned it for several years now and use the hell out of it.

When it seems as though it isn't cutting well it is always that I have slacked and let the chain get dull.

If you know how to sharpen or just replace the chain when it gets dull this saw will cut through almost anything for the average homeowner.

The Best Small Saw In The Usa
Everyone wants to talk about this saw being this or that, but as a firewood cutter this saw really does the job for me.

It may have a problem or two, but take it to a saw shop and just get it fixed. They're not big problems- a spring in the pull cord may go bad, but this is free most of the time under the two year warranty.

The new bar chain tightening system is really good. If you watch the chain it will loosen a few times until it gets stretched, then it will stay tight for a lot... more

Good For The Price
I've had for 6 years and it ran very good until now. After a couple of years my gas cap swelled and I used a small pipe wrench to open and close. I did enjoy the tooless access to the tightening of the chain. I noticed Home Depot does not carry the tooless option on the 18 chainsaw. A little heavy compared to my previous echo.

Great Saw
I was hoping to be able to find this model still available, I had 1 before for 5 1/2 years, I feel I got my moneys worth. The saw I had before saved me hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars from having to have someone else do the work. I wasn't sure about the no tool adjustment on the first saw, being it was plastic and all, but it was a non issue, and I found it to be ideal it lasted great until the ethanol in the gas eventually got the gas line in the fuel tank. Everywhere I looked, Lowes,... more

Huge Timesaver
Two months ago, I had several 6 foot lengths of oak, roughly 18-28" in diameter. Without this tool, all I could do was roll the logs back and forth to complete saw cuts without hitting dirt.

Now, with my Woodchuck, it takes just minutes to lock the jaws, roll the log and complete a few cuts without having to worry about the ground, rocks, etc.

This was useful for some REALLY wide logs as well, including what must have been the base of the tree going over 30" in diameter. At... more

Gregg,
Sorry to hear about the issues you are having from you saw. These are normally great-running saws at a very competitive price point.

If the starting procedure is followed coupled with fresh and properly mixed fuel containing a quality 2-cycle oil, the machine should provide many years of use.

I would suggest taking it to an authorized service center to determine the cause of the issue.

Poor Machine
Mind you I am 54 and have been cutting firewood all my life, though I'm starting to slow down my pace. I have bought two of these in the last year. The first one cut about 2 1/2 cords of mixed Cherry and Maple. While cutting a modest limb the drive axle sheared- was not even bearing down on the limb. Figuring that was a fluke so I bought a second one because I already had bought 2 new chains to have handy. The second one did not even make it through 1 cord before having difficulty staying... more

What A Waste
I bought the previous model 6+ years ago - worked OK then had issues last year so I replaced with the same but updated model. Initially it would not to cut straight, replacing the tool-less chain adjustment mechanism with the fitting from the old saw solved that issue. A quick search on the internet revealing multiple people with this issue led me to this solution. Also from the get go it would never restart when warm, then after using it for weekends over 2-3 months, not for long periods it... more

Disappointed
Have had this model two years (first chain saw owned). Seemed to throw chain a lot, and when I took it in for regular service discovered it had developed an air leak that burned up the piston. Now it makes a good anchor.
