Q: Whats the difference between the rancher 460 or 455 and the tanaka saws there cc are much lower and why is this tanaka saw considered a proffesional grade saw if it is only mid 30 cc range? in the market for a worthy saw for cutting fire wood year round.
by Todd Booth from Michigan on October 22, 2011

A: Both Tanaka and Husqvarna make excellent chain saws. There are a couple things to consider in order to get the best saw for you.

If you cut a lot of smaller wood at one time, or spend time cutting from a ladder- the Tanaka saws are lighter weight, and have a smaller bar. They are easier to haul up into the trees for topping and trimming.

The weight may not seem like a big difference at first, but imagine how your arms will feel lifting 9 pounds repeatedly for an hour, or lifting 17 pounds repeatedly for an hour.

The Husqvarna saws are very durable- their heavier weight is caused by heavy duty components and a big, 20" bar.

The Rancher series is meant to work hard and stand up to the demands of ranchers, farmers, and contractors- and for cutting up large trees and logs.

Many folks own both saws- a 12" bar for small jobs, and the big 20" bar for felling large trees and cutting up big logs. Let the kind of cutting you will be doing determine the best saw for the job.

Q: Hey Mike,
I need a light chainsaw to cut shooting lanes and walking paths in my hunting land. I have an 18" bar saw already for bigger stuff, but would prefer something easier to manage that I can hold for hours at a time in the uneven terrrain. I have never used a top handle chainsaw. Would that be an option? Any recommendations?

by Steve Nooyen from Wisconsin on August 09, 2011

A: The Tanaka you chose is a great and light weight saw. Good choice selection. This will work great for your situation.

Tanaka is one of the pioneers in 2-stroke (gas-oil mix) engines. Most of their engines meet the strict California CARB emissions standards; and not many others do.

Why, you might ask, is such a great engine on such a little saw? This size and brand is used by professional arborists for climbing trees without catching on branches, as well as trimming limbs from fallen trees- all day, every day.

The light weight and great balance mean you can work longer with less fatigue. Or, a smaller... more

Still Haven't Been Able To Start It
When you're thinking 'climbing saw for $300, must be too good to be true, it is. This isn't my first saw, my others (orange) are plastic too. This one feels toyish. Can't quite tell you how it runs because after four different heated attempts to try and run it it still won't start. Wishing I had spent the extra $200 so it matched my others.
Pros: Price, Light Weight
Cons: Difficult To Use, Unreliable

This Tanaka Had Better Work!!
Just puchased one 12" Tanaka today. At first glance it is a bit plasticky, no see-though window to check fuel level and now wont start after 5 mins use!! Also drinks chain oil until I did some tweaking.
Pros: Price, Light Weight
Cons: Unreliable, Bad Instructions, Durability

I finally got to use my new saw when the weather broke. It was a little hard to crank at the start but once I got it cranked the first time, it was not a problem. This saw may be small, but it cuts wood like a much larger saw. It zipped right through large limbs, and it was easy to one hand cut an over head limb I could not have reached with a heavier saw. I like it verry much.

Great Value And Fantastic Warranty!
Purchased this saw after my third back operation, needed something lighter. This saw has fit the bill!

I own Stihl, Husqavarna, and Echo so I am experienced with saws. This one fit the bill for smaller trees and brush. When my wife saw it she said it looked like a toy, she was wrong.

Lots of power, good balance runs great. Warranty in box said 2 years, called Chainsaw Direct and they said it was a 7 Year and gave me the number for Tanaka. I called the factory and Chainsaw direct was... more

Not Quite What I Had Expected
It does look like a toy... all plastic, and not very thick plastic at that. I guess I thought a "Professional" saw would be made of metal. I also thought that it would use a 3/8 chain but it is smaller. It also is a little hard to start. If it weren't for the 20% restocking fee, I would have returned it.

CSD RESPONDS: The high-tech composites used in this saw are light weight, but sturdy. Heavier chain saws tire you out faster than lighter ones if you are using them for extended... more

Greart Little Saw
This is a great little saw for the money. It is light weight but cuts like a big saw.
I love the controls being on top like they are and the saw has plenty of power for cutting small trees and in heavy brush.

It is a little difficult to get parts, I lost the tenisioner in the woods and it was a little difficult to get a replacement but it did come.

Great little saw for what it is meant to do. I am extremely happy except when I try to cut to big of wood. Four or five inches is about maximum for good performance. Love the light weight and one hand operation for cutting tree tops and throwing pieces in pile. Starts great and runs smooth.

Light Weight Chain Saw Meets My Expectations
I wanted a light weight chainsaw to use while maintaining the trails in our local land trust, I often hike for miles so a light weight saw was my objective. I found this inexpensive saw met my needs.

It starts easily. I use a premixed fuel (SEF 40:1, 94 octane, no ethanol). My only complaint is that the clutch brake engages too easily, a seemingly light bump will cause the saw brake to engage. The saw is made out of plastic materials and so probably it should not be used in anything other... more

It Rocks !
It's made in Japan, high quality, no zinc fasteners.
Very well put together, and very light.
For a small saw, it can't be beat. High rpm and decent torque.
Out performs my 18" Husky, very easy for my 100lb wife to start and use.
Make a bigger one and I will buy it !

Happy But...
This saw has a lot of power for its size, very easy to hold and weighs very little.
It is Great for brush cleanup and small tree felling.
I only wish they would have put a primer bulb on this saw as the first start-up from cold takes a bit of patience other than that I am satisfied.
